Albert Lee Melichar (Al), age 80, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026 following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A faithful servant of God and a cherished member of the community, he lived a life defined by purpose, kindness and generosity.
Al was born December 7th, 1945 in Caldwell, Kansas, the youngest child of Melo and Helen Melichar. He was raised on the family farm with his older siblings, Melinda and Bob, and took great pride in being a fourth-generation farmer. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1963 and from the Teacher’s College (Emporia State University) in 1967. There, alongside his love of farming, he discovered a passion for teaching science. Al became a beloved educator in both the Caldwell and Wellington communities.
Albert proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves earning the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honored to share this call to service with his grandson, Gianni.
Al married “his sweetheart”, Turi Elizabeth Rogers on July 5, 1968 in Fairview, Kansas. Together, they raised two children, Amy Lee and Tad Melo. He was a devoted and loving husband and father who took great joy in his family. Al and Turi shared 54 years of marriage rooted in faith, family and a partnership that was an inspiration to everyone who knew them.
In his life, Albert encountered both the richness of joy and weight of sorrow. In 2009, Turi was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and just a year later, they faced the tragic loss of their son, Tad. Through it all, Al never wavered in his faith or love. He chose to turn his grief into purpose, dedicating himself fully to caring for Turi. Every day, he found ways to bring joy and comfort – whether dressing in matching clothes so she wouldn’t get lost or simply singing her favorite songs. Al’s devotion until her passing in 2023 was a testament to a love that endured every challenge and remained steadfast to the very end.
During this time, Al also began volunteering as a support group leader with the Alzheimer’s Association, helping other caregivers navigate their own journeys and ensuring that no new caregiver ever felt alone. Through this work, he formed many meaningful friendships. In recognition of this extraordinary act of love and service, Albert was nominated for---and received---the Duane Smith Caregiver of the Year Award from the Alzheimer’s Association.
Al’s greatest joy was being “Papa” to his grandchildren, Isabella Turi and Gianni Santo. They undoubtedly will never forget hours spent riding the “train” he built on the farm from repurposed barrels, driving the combine during wheat harvest, or hearing him cheer them on at countless athletic and school events. Papa had a way of making life more fun, turning everyday moments into precious memories!
He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews, who will forever remember him for the joy and kindness he brought into their lives--whether through shared times on the farm, surprise visits or thoughtful handwritten notes, Uncle Al had a special way of making everyone feel valued and loved.
Faith was the cornerstone of Albert’s life and he shared God’s love through humble acts of service – from giving Payday candy bars to show appreciation, offering a prayer or scripture verse at just the right moment, to faithfully sitting at the bedside of an ill or dying loved one. He even shared God’s word with his weekly youth group, where the “youth” averaged 90 years old!
Following Turi’s passing, Albert found companionship and joy with his dear friend, Nancy Cone. Together they embraced life—traveling to new places, volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association and simply enjoying one another’s company. Nancy provided Albert with unwavering care, love, and support, for which his family remains deeply grateful.
Al’s legacy lives on in the land he lovingly farmed, the countless educators and students he inspired, the lives he changed for the better, and the family and community he cherished so deeply. Though he will be greatly missed, his example of faith in action, humble service, and steadfast love will continue to guide all who knew and loved him.
Albert is survived by his daughter Amy (Santo) Scavuzzo of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Isabella and Gianni; sister Melinda Norton of Edmond, Oklahoma; dear friend Nancy Cone of Wichita, Kansas; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends
He was preceded in death by his wife Turi; son Tad; parents Helen and Melo Melichar; brother Dr. Robert Melichar; and niece Nancy Ann Norton
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Church, Caldwell, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association to support vital caregiver support groups – a cause close to his heart.

Mr. Melichar was a person that we respected so very much. His love for God, his wife, his family, his neighbors, this great country and the rest of us was always present when he was around. He will be so very missed by a lot of us. Keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers. With sincerest sympathy ~ Brian and Glenda Wright and family.
Al was a dear friend and a wonderful Christian man who touched so many lives and made the world a better place. I have been blessed by his friendship, support, and encouragement and inspired by his example. He will be greatly missed, but I am comforted in knowing he is at peace and with his Heavenly Father.
He was one of the finest men I have ever known. I believe he was in my husband’s graduating class in Caldwell. They maintained their friendship til Fred passed. When I was a student nurse, I took care of his father in the hospital.
