July 13, 1928 ~ May 10, 2009
Anna Mae Turek was born in Grant County, Oklahoma, the third child of Joseph Selmat, Jr. and Antonia “Tony” (Mesis) Selmat, July 13, 1928. She was raised on the family farm three and one half miles west of Renfrow, Oklahoma and attended Hickory Center School. Anna Mae helped her mother care for the three younger children.
Meeting her future husband, John, at a country dance, they were married November 10, 1945 at Winfield, Kansas. They were blessed with two sons, Gary Joe and Dennis Alan. John and Anna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. As a young wife and mother, Anna Mae supported her sons in their school work and worked side by side with
her husband in their farming operation. During the years of raising her children she was very active in the E.H.U. Club. Then, in 1975, Anna began working at the Caldwell Nursing Home. She completed her medical aide certification at Pratt, Kansas and later worked at the Wellington Nursing Home, retiring in 1997.
Her biggest joy in life was her only grandson, Daniel Turek. She was always willing and eager to help take care of Daniel when his mother, Elizabeth, was ill. She enjoyed watching Daniel in all his school activities, especially his home football games.
In 2006, Anna Mae entered the Goodrick Care Home and in July of 2007 she moved to the Spring View Manor in Conway Springs, Kansas. Anna had plans go to the farm for Mother’s Day for a day of visiting with her two sons and grandson and to play with her cat, Punky, and dog, Manerva. However she became ill on May 9 and Sunday morning an ambulance brought her to the Caldwell Hospital. A few hours later, on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2009, she was in her eternal home rather than at the farm.
Anna is preceded in death by her husband John on December 15, 2001; sister Rose Marks and brother Edward Selmat. She is survived by her sons Gary Joe Turek and Dennis Alan Turek, both of Caldwell, Kansas; a grandson, Daniel John Turek, of Caldwell; a brother Lee Selmat and his wife Nevaleen of Wakita, Oklahoma; sisters, Barbara Straka of Oklahoma City and Lavona Baker and husband John of Caldwell, Kansas; aunt Juanita Mesis
of Hennessey, Oklahoma and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Anna will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Friends may call at the mortuary from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009.
Funeral services for Anna Turek will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel, Caldwell, Kansas. Interment will be in the Caldwell City Cemetery. Memorials may be given in Anna's name to the Sumner County District #1 Hospital, Caldwell, Kansas.

I worked with Anna for many years at the Leisure Center in Caldwell. She loved to care for the clients living there. I know that she also loved her family very much. One of the worst times for me was harvest time--she was too busy on the farm to help at the home as needed. My dad recently went to his eternal home as well & I know how hard & sad it is to go on without them, but know that that is our selfishness. They are so much better now & we will join them when our names too come up on the roll call. My thoughts & prayers are with you all. God Bless.
