Carol Hess

June 17, 1930 ~ December 10, 2019

Carol June Hess, of Caldwell, Kansas, passed away on December 10, 2019. Carol was the second child born to Jesse and Clara Hoyt on June 17, 1930 in Anthony, Kansas. During her childhood, Carol resided west of Caldwell, Kansas and attended and graduated from Caldwell High School. Carol’s favorite subject in school was Home Economics, where she learned how to sew and cook new recipes. Later in her life, her family enjoyed many homemade outfits and delicious meals and desserts. Due to the shortage of area teachers and after attending K-State and a summer teaching program at Cowley County Junior College, Carol taught several grades at country schoolhouses for four years. Carol began dating her high school sweetheart, Paul Hess, at the age of 14 and at age of 20 they married on February 2, 1951.

Shortly after the wedding, Paul was sent to fight in the Korean Conflict. Carol continued to teach until her groom returned home the following year. Once reunited, Paul and Carol helped operate the family farm outside of Corbin, Kansas. In 1960 the Hess family moved to their farm in the South Haven, Kansas area. Paul and Carol were members of the South Haven United Methodist Church. The couple retired from farming in 1994 and moved to their current home in Caldwell, Kansas, while continuing to assist their son Don with the family farm for several years. Memorial Day weekends were a vital part of the Hess family. It is tradition for the family to be home for the Memorial Day services, decorating graves and reminiscing about our loved ones who have passed on.

Paul and Carol were always present during children and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. Carol experienced several family trips as a child and shared her joy of traveling by enjoying several large family trips to Branson, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia and within the last several years a cruise to Mexico with all of their children and spouses.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; parents; and sister, Helen Knowles.

Survivors include her five children: Paula Fast and Kelvin, Yukon, Oklahoma; Donald Hess and Katrena, South Haven, Kansas; Dale Hess and Lisa, McKinney, Texas; Terry Hess and Kim, Overland Park, Kansas; Connie Nuse and Derald, Rose Hill, Kansas.
