Doris Jane Skrdla was born on June 6, 1939 in McLennan County, TX at the farm east of West, TX, to Henry Frank and Lydia Emilie (Hegar) Krizan, and passed from this life Monday, May 6, 2019 at her home southeast of Renfrow, OK. She attended West Elementary School for her first seven years and later attended Dennison High School where she graduated in 1957. She took the entrance exam for Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Houston TX, and was awarded a three-year scholarship, completing her studies and practice and received her certification as a Registered Nurse (RN). She went on to practice as a nurse at Baylor University Hospital where she especially enjoyed her work in the maternity ward. On September 16, 1964, she married Emil Skrdla at the Czech Brethren Church in Seaton, Texas. She moved to Renfrow, OK, where she farmed with her husband and began to raise a family.
Doris enjoyed gardening, raising poultry, sewing and embroidery work and baking while at the farm, hosting many family holiday dinners. During those family get-togethers, she enjoyed playing board games with her children and grandchildren and watching them grow up. She and her family made many trips back to Texas to see her many dear uncles, aunts, cousins, and other relatives at family reunions. To feed her husband, five kids and mother, on those long hot car rides, she often would make a large batch of fried chicken and when everyone was good and hungry, she had a roadside picnic waiting. Doris spent many Sunday afternoons with her young family at the Great Salt Plains so the kids could splash and play in the water and served many more picnics there. She shared the love of music with Emil, so when away from the farm, they enjoyed listening to and dancing to polkas and waltzes. She used her sewing and embroidery skills to make Czech costumes for her kids to wear to the Czech days at the Sumner County Fair at Caldwell, Kansas. Later, Doris and Emil joined the #1 Oklahoma Polka Club and began regularly going to Polka dances and Czech festivals with their five children and enjoyed getting to spend time visiting with friends. She was a member of and served luncheons for the women's group at the Congregational Church of Christ in Medford, Oklahoma where her family attended regularly until its closing. She later became a member of the First Baptist Church of Medford and was a long-time member of SPJST Lodge Number 6, Cottonwood, Texas.
Doris loved to travel with her husband and kids, and they made many trips together including driving through Yellowstone, Washington, Oregon, and the Grand Canyon on a round trip adventure when their girls were young. They drove to Carlsbad Caverns after having their third child and made many trips to the Colorado Rockies visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, Pikes Peak and many other natural attractions in the Colorado Springs area after having her last two children. After her children were grown, she traveled with her children and grandchildren to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Oregon, and Washington and enjoyed taking the ferry rides from Victoria Island to Washington. She traveled Southwest with them to San Francisco, Las Vegas, and the Hoover Dam. Then she went Northeast to New York, Pennsylvania, and to the Mall of America. But road trips weren't her only mode of travel; she enjoyed flying north to Alaska to take two cruises and enjoyed a Caribbean cruise to the Yucatan Peninsula and a cruise from Florida to California through the Panama Canal.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Skrdla; her parents, Henry and Lydia Krizan; an infant sister, Gladys Ann. Doris is survived by her five children, Linda Pray and husband, Todd of Bluff City, KS, Arlene Wilson and husband John of Braman, Joseph Alan Skrdla of Medford, David Skrdla and wife Ji Young of Oklahoma City, and John Skrdla of Renfrow; thirteen grandchildren; Caitlyn, Grayson, Emily, and Jessa Ann Pray, Luke and Sara Wilson, Emilee, Abigail, Austin, Erick, and Lydia Skrdla; William and Wesley Skrdla; cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Memorials may be made to the Deer Creek Fire Department and sent to the Schaeffer Mortuary, 6. N. Main, Caldwell, Kansas 67022.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at the Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel in Caldwell.
Interment will be in the Caldwell City Cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas.
