Douglas Kim Volavka was born February 12, 1952 in Kansas. He was in foster care before he was adopted at the age of 3 by Charlie and Madge Volavka in 1955. He grew up on the farm NE of Caldwell and helped his parents with the farming. He attended Drury School in Drury, Kansas through 6th grade. He attended Junior High and High School in Caldwell, Kansas from which he graduated in 1970. Doug then attended Pratt Community College for a short time. From there he decided that he wanted to travel and see other places. During his travels he ended up in Laurens, South Carolina where he lived for about 20 years until his death on March 9, 2019 from a massive heart attack. He left his good friends: Amanda, Patty, Ben and Carol Senn of Laurens, South Carolina.
Doug was baptized and a member of the Corbin United Methodist Church. He enjoyed being a member of the Methodist Youth Group and Drury Millers 4-H Club. He liked track in high school, especially high jump. Doug loved to smile, joke and was friendly to everyone.
Doug is survived by his sister, Patricia Kurdziel and husband, Siegmund of Auburn, Washington; his niece, Katrina South (Shawn) of Covington, Washington; his nephew, Kevin Kurdziel (Rebecca) of Ephrata, Washington; his aunt Barbara Wright of Anthony, Kansas and several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Madge Volavka; his paternal grandparents, Karel and Antonie Volavka; his maternal grandparents, B.F. and Belle Cline and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Doug is being laid to rest with a graveside service at the Czechoslovakian Cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas next to his parents on March 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
Memorials may be given in memory of Doug to the Caldwell Food Bank and left in care of the mortuary.
