Duane Scribner

February 1, 1923 ~ August 1, 2018

Alfred Duane Scribner was born the second son to William Joseph and Lou Mae Hull Scribner on February 1, 1923, in Renfrow, Oklahoma. He passed away peacefully at his home in Caldwell on August 1, 2018 at the age of 95.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Kenneth and grandson Chad.

He is survived by his wife, Mona; daughters, Connie Eckermann and husband Mick, Vonya Schwertfeger and husband Bill; grandchildren, Rohn and Sheri Eckermann, Kent and Denise Eckermann, Craig Eckermann and Jenny Shaffer all of Caldwell, Tracey and Chris Overall of Arkansas City, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Amanda Eckermann, Ashton Spore (Ethan), Weston Eckermann, Mason Eckermann, Chris and Monique Eckermann of Wichita, Kansas, Emma and Christopher Overall; great-great-grandchildren, Mikkel, Nyah, Mya Eckermann and Koba Spore; special sister-in-law, Joan Arterburn; sons not by birth but by choice, Rod Lungren, Bob Mandevill, C. L. Henton; and many other relatives and friends.

Duane grew up in Renfrow. He married Lois Werneke on Jan 10, 1942 and farmed in the Refrow area. He served in the military from 1942 – 1945. In 1956 he moved his family to a farm west of Caldwell where he continued farming and did carpentry in the off season. He enjoyed keeping ponies for his girls and their friends to ride. Duane was an avid bowler, once bowling a 300.

In 1963 the family moved into Caldwell where he went to work as a mail carrier and also worked at Caldwell Equipment. This later became Scribs Fertilizer.

Duane married Mona Scott Czaplinski in 1968. As a pastime they enjoyed coyote hunting (which was passed on to the grandkids), raising and racing horses and passing time with his extended family and many friends.

In October Duane and Mona would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Duane lived a long, full and happy life. He served his country and was passionate about the things he believed in. He was filled with piss and vinegar and rarely slowed down. He never met a stranger, was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. The world will not be the same without him. Rest peacefully - we love you.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 Monday, August 6, 2018 at the Caldwell City Cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas.

Memorials may be given in memory of Duane to the Caldwell Historical Society, for the back wall project, or to Air Warrior Courage Foundation and left in care of the mortuary.

I was deeply sadded to just recently learned of "unks" passing. He was a great guy and will be missed and mourned by many including myself.

One of the memories, over the years, that sticks in my mind, was from 1959 or 1960 when I was out at the farm with Grandpa & Grandma Smetana. They were remodeling the house and hired Uncle Duane, "Punk" and some others to do the remodeling. When we all sit down to lunch, I nataurally wanted to sit next to Duane. I told my Grandmother, that I didn't want to eat the crust on my sandwich and to cut them off (yes I was a spoiled little sh*t). Duane told me "You see this?" (While pointing to the hair on his fingers between the knuckles) "If you don't eat the crust on your bread you'll never have hair on your knuckles!" Well that settled it - - I haven't missed any crust on my bread now for about 57 years! LOL

Another time that he was very helpful to me was when Grandpa Smetana was in the hospital in Wellington, after his last heart attack. I was staying with him & Lois and everyone for a week or such, I was very worried that he was going to die and Uncle Duane sit me down on the front porch step on the house over on market and told me factually that my Grandad was very sick and hurting and not doing well. He talked to me about the coming and goi9ng of people in our lives and eminded me if God wanted my Grandfather to come home to him, that he wouldn't be in pain anymore and though we would all miss him we would always have the memories and that someday we would all be together in Heaven. (I have appreciated that frank talk for many years, compared to the feel good advice I got from many at that time)

Just as "Unk" told me I know that he is in his heavenly rest and most likely enjoying the company of a wonderful spiotted appalosa that is faster than all get out ......

I am grateful to have had him in my life and know that you are all in my thoughts & prayers

LOVE & SYMPATHIES - - Randy

Dear Mona and family,

Family and Friends - 08/17/2018

I am saddened to read of Duane's passing. I am the widow of Merle Sander, and the guys were both born in Renfrow and knew each other their entire lives. I am sorry that Duane didn't make it until your 50th Anniversary - it was so close. Just treasure all the beautiful memories you had together.
