Ellen was born on November 3, 1929 to Roy and Mona (Silliman) Richards in Cresco, Iowa. She shares her birthday with twin sister Helen Elnora (Richards) Moser. Ellen attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she earned her nursing degree.
She then married Homer Narber Showman, Sr. on December 30, 1951 in Cresco, Iowa. They lived on the family farm in Benton County, Iowa, and later lived in Leighton, Iowa near Pella. Homer and Ellen traveled to and lived in several countries, including Labrador, Canada and the Philippines. Ellen worked with missionary organizations, and at various hospitals, and thoroughly enjoyed her career as a registered nurse. She most recently had worked in labor and delivery for 15 years at the Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas before retiring in 1990.
Homer and Ellen then moved to South Haven, Kansas to be closer to family. Ellen’s life revolved around her children and grandchildren and she was treasured by all who knew her. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and Ellen soon became known as “Grammy” to lots of children. In August of 2000 Ellen began volunteering as a teacher’s aide in the South Haven Elementary School, where she cherished special relationships with teachers and students. She was continuing to volunteer at the school until she was hospitalized on January 16, 2009. Ellen and Homer attended the Caldwell Assembly of God Church. Homer, Ellen’s husband of 52 years, went home to be with the Lord on January 10, 2004.
Ellen is survived by her three sons, Homer, Jr. and wife Gail of Shellsburg, Iowa; David and wife Carla of Tulsa, Oklahoma; John and wife Denise of South Haven, Kansas. She has fourteen grandchildren; Sam (Melissa), Joshua (Leanne), Jillian, Ben, Luke (Leanna), Jihrleah, Ashley (fiancé Brady), Johanna, Alyssa, Jessica, Jordana, Jonathan, Austin and Josiah. She also has three great grandchildren: Anne, Sammy and John. She leaves behind her twin sister Helen Moser of Alpharetta, Georgia, and sister-in-law, Dorris Brown of Denver, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her parents, and husband of 52 years, Homer, Sr.
Memorials have been established with the South Haven Elementary School (checks can be made to USD #509), and the South Haven Senior Center.
