Jerry A. Cowell


Jerry Allen Cowell passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the age of 71 in Haysville, Kansas. He was born on January 10, 1949 in Caldwell, Kansas to Roy Emerson and Aloise Josephine (Gerberding) Cowell. He grew up with two brothers, Ronnie who was older and Jack who was younger.


As a family, they enjoyed coyote hunting, playing cards and games with relatives and during the summer months boating and camping. They belonged to the Wellington Boat Club where they met several local families.

He attended Caldwell Schools and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1967. He went on to Emporia State but quit in his 4th year.


While in high school he worked at Nispel Furniture Store. After college he moved to Topeka, Kansas and worked as a clerk stenographer at the State Capitol building in the Legislative Research Department for about one and a half years. He moved back to Wichita and worked about two years at Parkers Fine foods Grocery Store. He then changed jobs and worked as a Train Master Clerk for MoPac Railroad for about one and a half years. He worked for the Wichita School System as a clerk stenographer typist for about eight years then transferred to the Trucking Department as a night secretary for two years, then went to work as a word processor at Boeing in 1988 for about eight and one-half years.


Jerry remembered his skiing and boating time with fondness. He enjoyed going to teen hops about once a month. He also enjoyed having flowers, plants, and pets. He enjoyed being around his aunts, uncles and cousins.


He lived in Wichita about twenty-eight years moving back to Caldwell in the summer of 1988. In January, he moved to Wellington Manor, and then Washington Manor in 2005, and the Vantage Point Apartments with assistance from Resource Independent Living for 1 year before moving to Wheat Capitol Manor living there until 2019, when he moved to DiversiCare of Haysville.

He is preceded in death by his mom and dad, a stillborn baby sister, several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his brothers Ronald Cowell, Jack (Glenda) Cowell all of Wellington, nieces, Stacy (Billy) Harp of Belle Plaine, Kansas; Amy (Mike) Boyd of Hermitage, Tennessee and their children, Skylar, Alexandria and Sean Boyd and special care giver, Tammy Garrison.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2020 at the Caldwell City Cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas.


Memorials may be given to the CHS Alumni Association General Fund or Rivercross Hospice and sent in care of the mortuary.
