Joseph "Joe" Shaffer


September 8, 1926 ~ June 27, 2017


Joseph Calvin Shaffer, Jr, a longtime resident of Caldwell, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Anthony, Kansas. He was 90 years old.


Joe and his twin sister, Alma, were born September 8, 1926 to Joseph Calvin and Melicca Myrtle (Magee) Shaffer at Fairfax, Oklahoma.


Joe was raised in the Doggie Creek community on a farm and attended the Fairfax Schools. When he was a young boy he trapped animals and sold the pelts for spending money. As a teenager he came to the Blackburn area and worked for Fred McClafkin and Arthur Covey during the wheat harvest. He was hired by Sean Young International Harvester as a mechanic. After he returned to Fairfax he was drafted into the Army in 1952. He served in Panama where he finished his education. In 1954 he was honorably discharged.


When Joe returned to Caldwell for a visit in June of 1954 he met the love of his life, Alberta Falkenberg. They were married November 4th, 1956. Three children were born to this union, Randy, Deborah and Dan.


Joe worked for McGowen Oilfield Construction hauling dozers to well sites and later for Ponca Grain. In 1966 he bought the trash service in Caldwell and moved his family back to Caldwell. He ran the trash service until he retired and turned the service over to his sons.


He was a member of the Caldwell United Methodist Church and the Caldwell Lion’s Club.


Joe is survived by his wife Alberta of the home; children, Randy of Caldwell, Debbie Massey and her husband Ernie of Renfrow, Oklahoma and Dan of Caldwell, Ted Shaffer and his wife Barbara of Hermiston, Oregon, Patti Jones and her husband H.B. of Kinston, North Carolina; brothers, Virgil Shaffer and his wife Margaret of Owasso, Oklahoma, Bill Shaffer and his wife Karen of Fairfax, Oklahoma, Bonnie Jester and her husband Shirl of Del City, Oklahoma; close grandchildren, Shane, Tammie, Missy, Nikkie, Tiffany, Jared, Ginny, Jesse, Louise, Fred, Jason, Dusty and Tim; great-grandchildren, Miranda, Trae, Billie, Kaden, Audrey, Blake, Landon, Thomas, Hagen, Dominic, Calvin and Aryia, a host of other grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Alma Speakman; sister, Ola Parker; grandson, Billie Joe “B.J. Shaffer; 2 nephews, Wayne Shaffer and John Kirk; 2 great nephews, Brandon and Terrance Branscum; one niece Kimberly Shaffer.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Caldwell. Interment will be in the Caldwell City Cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas.


Memorials may be given in memory of Joe to the United Methodist Church or to Friendship Meals and left in care of the mortuary.
