Larry Joe Malden, age 71, retired Yeoman First Class, United States Navy, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024. Larry was born on January 27, 1953 in Cherokee, OK to Mary Nickel. He attended first grade in Belle Plaine, KS and when the family moved to Caldwell, KS, he spend the rest of his years there, graduating in 1971.
Directly after high school, Larry joined the US Navy. He spent time on the USS Ranger, USS American, ASNS Sirius, and Persuppdet in La Maddalena, Italy before his retirement in 1992. He came back home to Caldwell, KS and in more recent years moved to Hunnewell, KS.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his buddies in the garage, going to the casino, reciting his favorite movie and tv show quotes, and drinking Coca-Cola. He was very proud of winning his age category in the South Haven Fair 5K for 3 years in a row (2022-2024).
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Smock, stepfather, Murray Smock, and sister Barbara Puckhaber.
His is survived by his sister, Brenda (Charles) Strickland, nephew Jason (Beth) Strickland, niece Kayla (Curtis) Betzen, 4 great-nieces and 1 great-nephew and numerous Hunnewell friends that were like family.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2024 at the Caldwell City Cemetery, Caldwell, KS.
