Lela Mae Patton passed away in Caldwell, Kansas Tuesday evening, December 30, 2014. She was 87 years old. Lela was the oldest child born in Kay County near Nardin, Oklahoma to John and Ruth Broetz McGrew. She attended Cooper Grade School. When she was ready to start high school, the family moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma. She graduated in 1945 from Blackwell High School. When she was 16 years old, she went to work for S.H. Kress & Co. in Blackwell.
Lela met James E. Patton when he was a groomsman and she was a bridesmaid in a wedding in Blackwell, Oklahoma. The couple married May 1, 1948, establishing their home in the North Star community of Grant County, Oklahoma. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008.
Lela was a homemaker for her family. She was a charter member of the Redbud Extension Club. She was a 4-H leader. She won many ribbons at the Grant County Fair and Grant County Soil Conservation fair for her baking.
She is survived by her son, Jimmy of Medford, Oklahoma; daughters, Ruth Campbell of Hunter, Oklahoma and Lola Jean Patton of Dallas, Texas; two grandsons; brother-in-law Jim Luce of El Dorado, Kansas; other relatives and friends.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; sister, Irene Boyle; sister, Mary Ellen Luce and brother, Lester McGrew.
Memorials may be given in memory of Lela to the Sumner County Hospital District #1 or to the Wakita Community Health Center.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel, Caldwell, Kansas.
