Lois Arlene Youree Akers passed away February 12, 2023 at the age of 95. She was born October 5, 1927 on a farm in Grant County, Oklahoma to Terrell and Irene (Parsons) Youree. Lois loved her role as big sister to Colleen and Norma Jean.
Lois graduated from Caldwell High School in 1945 and started teaching at the Spring Creek School near Corbin. She married Bill Akers on February 9, 1947. Their married life began on the family farm north of Corbin. Bill and Lois forged many close lifetime friendships with other local couples and there were frequent card parties and vacations. Their marriage was blessed with three children Steve, Jan, and Stan.
Lois was a devoted and loving mother who spent many hours and traveled many miles taking her kids between baseball games, wheatfields, and church activities.
Lois was active in her small Corbin Church. She attended many women’s meetings, cooked for the famous Corbin turkey supper, and took part in any other church activity. She made everyone she knew feel like family by welcoming them into her home with cookies or a meal. She was an amazing cook and was well-known for the skill. One farmhand was quoted as saying “I was always willing to help with harvest just so I could eat Lois’s meals!”.
She was lovingly named “Granny Girl” by her grandkids, a nickname she proudly owned. Friends and acquaintances even took to using the moniker. Her role as Granny Girl included countless trips to Low Water Bridge for swimming, building sandcastles, and baiting hooks with bacon to catch crawdads. Trips to the farm were always memorable for her grandkids, complete with Pepsi floats. As the grandkids grew older, she’d bid them goodbye with “pocket money” and homemade cookies. She’d follow them out the door, barefoot in any weather, so that she could wave as they drove out.
She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Survivors include children Steve (Sharon), Stan (Mandy), and Jan (Rick) Thompson; grandchildren Trent (Amy) Thompson, Courtney (Shane) Paul, Carey (Andrew) Hanzlicek, Matt (Jenny) Thompson, Megan Akers, Ivy (Aaron) Arnett, and Lindsey (Kyle) Laughlin. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the Corbin Country Church, Corbin, Kansas with Pastor Jacob Maforo officiating. Interment will follow at the Corzine Cemetery, Corbin, Kansas.
Memorials may be made to the Corbin Country Church and sent in care of the mortuary.
