March 5, 1922 ~ October 2, 2017
Madge Lucille (Cline) Volavka was born March 5, 1922 on the family farm near Medford, Oklahoma to Benjamin Franklin Cline and Belle R. Cline.
Madge graduated from Medford High School in 1939 and Tonkawa Junior College in 1941. She was always on the honor roll throughout her school years.
Madge and her friends attended a lot of dances at the Sokol and ZCBJ halls. She met Charlie Volavka, Jr. at one of those dances and they married on August 5, 1941 at the Christian Church in Medford, Oklahoma. They were married for 58 years. They lived on a farm northeast of Caldwell where they raised cattle, sheep, shetland ponies, wheat, milo and alfalfa.
Madge and Charlie adopted two children, Patricia Ann at the age of 5 and Douglas Kim at the age of 3.
Madge was baptized and a member of the Medford Christian Church. After her marriage, she became a member of the Corbin Methodist Church. She later changed her membership to the Caldwell Christian Church when she and Charlie retired from farming and moved into Caldwell.
Madge continued living in Caldwell after Charlie passed away in 1999. She loved the life of farming and could be seen driving out to check on her farms quite frequently. She was never shy about giving her “farming advice” to her renters. Madge also liked to keep her yard, bushes and trees looking nice. Most of her friends and relatives couldn’t believe she was still mowing her grass with her riding mower up until last May when her health began to fail and she moved to Greenbriar Village Assisted Living in Enid, Oklahoma. As she became less mobile, she moved to Wakita Community Health Center in Wakita, Oklahoma. She loved being closer to Caldwell and the visits she received from family and friends.
Madge was a member of the Drury Star EHU for 76 years, holding most offices in the club. She helped start the Drury Millers 4-H club and was a community leader for many years where her two children were members until they graduated from high school. Madge and Charlie belonged to pitch and pinochle clubs for many years. They also joined a square dance club since they both loved dancing.
After Charlie passed away Madge met Lois Powell at the Caldwell Christian Church. She found out they had the same birthday (March 5) and they became best friends. She and Lois went many places together. They always spent Sundays at church, then lunch together with other friends, back to Madge’s house for an hour, then down to the One Stop for a cold drink and visit with friends til about 5 p.m. She treasured those times with Lois and her friends.
Madge passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Sumner County Hospital District#1 in Caldwell, Kansas at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 27 days. Her nieces, Patty Mennem and Sharon York were with her all day and Sharon was there when she went to join “My Charlie” whom she had loved and missed so much.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Grace Mennem and her beloved husband Charlie.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Kurdziel and son-in-law Siegmund Kurdziel of Auburn Washington; granddaughter, Katrina Lynn South and husband Shawn of Covington, Washington; her grandson, Kevin Wesley Kurdziel and wife Rebecca of Ephrata, Washington; son, Douglas Kim Volavka of Laurens, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday October 6, 2017 at the Central Christian Church in Caldwell, Kansas.

Was so sorry to hear of the passing of Madge. She was a sweet sweet lady and I loved her very much.
I met her in church after I moved to Caldwell and we became good friends for about 14 years. I was one of the ladies who went to lunch every Sunday with her and the other ladies. I moved to Wisconsin last year and didn't keep as close and I would have liked. She was so cute when she was mowing her yard.
Keeping all of you and your families in my prayers. May God give you all peace at this time.

We enjoyed Madge and Charlie and their children who were our country neighbors when I was growing up on the farm not far from Caldwell. She was a warm, genuine, and interesting person and we appreciated her friendship. We were sorry to hear of her passing and she will be missed. God bless and best wishes to her children.
