Maxine Helen Carter was born the youngest of eight children, to Louis Lee and Laura Odessa (Coleman) Slayden, May 24, 1923 at Patton Springs, Texas. Maxine died August 22, 2013 at the Clearwater Nursing and Rehabilitation in Clearwater, Kansas. She was 90 years old.
Maxine grew up in a very musically talented family and loved music. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing gospel music with her family.
She attended Eastern New Mexico University and graduated from there with a Bachelors Degree.
J.R. Carter and Maxine were united in marriage May 17, 1947 at Portales, New Mexico.
Maxine enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and traveling. She was a devout Christian and active in church. Her favorite trip was to the Holy Land in 2000.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.
She is survived by her husband J.R. of Caldwell, KS; son, David of Amarillo, TX; daughters, Paula James of Lubbock, TX, Peggy Buhrman of Wichita, KS; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel.
Interment will be in the Corzine Cemetery, Corbin, Kansas.
