Rod Lungren

April 23, 1952 ~ February 5, 2019

Rodney Glenn Lungren was born April 23, 1952. He was the third child born to Clifford and Ruth Lungren, and lived on a farm north of Corbin with his older sisters Adonna and Amy.

In 1960, the family moved to a farm on Highway 49, northwest of Corbin. Rod loved to farm and worked beside his dad in all aspects of farming. He joined the freshman class of Caldwell High School and during the next four years, played trombone in the CHS Band, as well as participated on the CHS football, basketball and track teams. Rod graduated with the CHS Class of 1970.

After graduation, Rod earned a football scholarship to Wichita State University. During that fall, he made good friendships with two other freshmen, John Potts and Ric Dvorak. Red shirt and freshman players did not travel with the teams. On October 2, 1970, one of the two planes carrying the WSU Shocker Football team en route to play at Logan, Utah, crashed in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Rod and the remaining freshman players finished the season for their lost teammates. Every time the young team entered a stadium after the crash, there was a standing ovation. This was clearly a life changing event for Rod.

After the second year of football, Rod chose to leave WSU and pursue a degree in agriculture. He transferred to Fort Hays State University where, for two years, he was a defensive tackle for the Tigers. He graduated with a degree in agriculture. Early in his senior year, a pretty blonde freshman caught his eye. Love bloomed and Rod married Pam Danielson on May 31, 1974. They had three daughters, Missy, Traci & Sara, who were raised on their family farm east of Caldwell. Rod and his family continued to farm for 44 years making many memories along the way.

Rod was able to attend the 2018 Lungren Reunion last July in Breckenridge, Colorado where, along the way, he was able to stop and visit the 1970 WSU football crash memorial.

Rod was a lifelong member of Corbin United Methodist Church where he held numerous positions within the Church. He was also a Trustee of the Falls Township and was on the Corzine Cemetery Board.

On Tuesday, February 5, 2019, Rod passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side.

Rod is survived by his wife, Pam, daughters Missy (Dustin) Atkins, Traci (AJ) Lewis, and Sara (Casey) Walkup, as well as his grandchildren, Conner, Keely, and Kylie Atkins, Nixon and Kyler Lewis, and Blakely and Brogan Walkup.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Corbin United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be given in memory of Rod to the Pancreatic Cancer Association or go to pancan.org to make a donation. They may also be given to the First Assembly of God for mission project in South Africa and left in care of the mortuary.

There are no words in the English language to describe the loss we all feel. But, Dave and I have many, many memories of times with Rod and Pam. He was not perfect, but he had a big heart and influenced many young people. He loved his girls and Pam.he will be missed but, I believe heaven knows he is there and he is healed. God bless you all.

My old neighbor and friend,

Shirley Henton - 02/06/2019

My old neighbor and friend, Sunday School classmate, and so many other memories run through my mind. Rod rode over on his Shetland pony and took us for rides, "talked" to my brother Bob whistling their own special code from the tree houses, built snow forts and was such a part of my childhood it doesn't seem possible he is gone to be with God, but I know his faith was real and I know he's there. My heart breaks for Pam and the family. He will be missed.

Rest in peace

Teresa Mercer-K... - 02/07/2019

Lots of memories of Rod refereeing our basketball games. It was always good to see that Rod was going to be on the court. He was very fair, no matter who was playing. He loved to joke with players and share a smile. Rest in peace and may your family find comfort in all the happy memories you created.

To Pam and Family,

Jim A. Fuhrmann - 02/07/2019

From the time my parents and I moved to Caldwell to take over the family farm in 1963, there were few activities at leisure and at church I was in that Rod wasn't there. I rode motorcycles and participated in watersports with him very frequently, we made many trips. There was never a dull moment, you could plan on everything being upbeat with him around. I think we can all agree he was an inspiration to us all, he gave life all that he had and lived it well. He will be greatly missed by all.

I am so sorry to hear about Rod's passing. I have many fond memories of talking to Rod at those all day SCBL volleyball tournaments and various Cedar Vale vs Caldwell games over the years. (we won't talk about how many years ago those "good ole days" were from now.) :)

I always had the utmost respect for him and your family. I will be praying for you all as your grieve and walk through these next days, months and years without Rod here.

Gone, but not forgotten...

Ronda Eslinger - 02/13/2019

I was so sad to read of Rod's passing this week. My first memories of Rod & Pam were during the co-ed volleyball tournaments we used to hold almost every weekend. Our highlight was always when someone talked Rod into doing cartwheels across the court!! I also enjoyed talking to Rod in the hospitality room when I taught at Argonia. We always talked about the good old days and our love for farming. Such good memories of a really good guy! RIP
