Rose J. Troyer, loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed from this life leaving behind a multitude of memories, including those of homemade bread that could make a whole cafeteria smile. She was born June 12, 1929, in Zenda, Kansas, to Theodore and Mary (Traffis) Depenbusch. She passed away from this life at Springview Manor in Conway Springs on September 2, 2025.

Rose’s early years took her from Zenda to Harper and then to Conway Springs. On November 16, 1950 she married Edward Troyer. Then in 1960, they settled in Caldwell, Kansas—the place that would forever be “home.” Over the years she worked at the Zenda Hatchery, Western Light & Gas in Harper, and Boeing, but her true calling was found in the kitchen at the Caldwell School Cafeteria. For 27 faithful years, Rose nourished generations of students and staff. Everyone knew that when she was baking, the halls would fill with the fragrance of fresh bread—and that her rolls were out of this world.

Family was the heartbeat of Rose’s life. It began on the sidelines of her children’s games, and soon she was “chasing” her oldest grandsons & great-grandsons from one season to the next—baseball, football, basketball, softball—cheering from the warmth of her car or in the stands and re-telling the plays with pride. Her plainspoken encouragement (and criticism), steady presence, and ready smile for her favorite players after the game made each one a winner.

Rose is survived by her sister, Kay Rankin; her children, Deb Webster and Tim (Erin) Troyer; her grandchildren, Jamie (Travis) York, Chris Webster, Jason (Heather) Webster, Josh Troyer, and Kyle Troyer; her great-grandchildren, Devan (Ileena) York, Jacob Webster, Vance York, Dylan Webster, Veyton York, Deric Webster, Jenna Webster, Dean Troyer and Titus Troyer; and her great-great-granddaughter, Jayde York. She is also fondly remembered by a multitude of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Mary (Traffis) Depenbusch; her husband, Edward “Flash” Troyer; her siblings—brothers Joe (Rosann) Depenbusch and Fred (Evelyn) Depenbusch, sisters Marie (Ted) Oliver and Helen (Ed) Giegerich— brother-in-law Charles Rankin and son-in-law Jay Webster.

Those who knew Rose will remember her for the way she lived—with her honesty, her heart, and a pan of warm rolls..

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025 and Mass of the Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, both at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Caldwell with Fr. Mike Klag presiding.

Memorials may be made to Spring View Manor for activities and sent in care of the mortuary.
